Kendrick Lamar was the big winner at Sunday's BET Awards at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. And Drake pulled out of the ceremony at the last minute, leading some to speculate he didn't want to come face-to-face with Chris Brown.

  • Kendrick Lamar came out on top against Drake and 2 Chains for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist and Best New Artist, and even managed to blow past  Jay-ZLil Wayne and Rick Ross for Best Collaboration, snagging the win with A$AP Rocky and Drake for “Problem.”
  • It was no surprise that Nicki Minaj took home the award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist over Azaelia Banks, Eve and Rasheeda fromLove & Hip-Hop. Nicki dedicated her win to her Barbs for keeping her inspired and motivated.
  • Miguel dedicated his award for Best Male R&B Artist to his fans and encouraged people to follow their dreams. And no -- he didn’t make any leg drop jokes during his acceptance speech.

The Performers

  • Chris Brown opened the festivities with his current smash hit “Fine China” and “Don’t Think They Know,” featuring the late Aaliyah. Nicki Minaj was timely for her verse on “Right By My Side,” doing so from an elevated contraption.
  • Kendrick Lamar dropped some bars from “M.A.A.D City” and unexpectedly brought out Erykah Badu for “Kill My Vibe” -- what a pleasant surprise.
  • R. Kelly shut down the BET Awards with a medley of his hits. A choir stormed the aisles before the Pied Piper appeared on stage in a spiked-out leather jacket and hat. He debuted a snippet of a new song and then dove into his catalog of hits, performing seconds of each as the celebs including Nicki Minaj sang along.
  • Mariah Carey brought some glitz and glamor to the stage. The pop diva blessed the audience with her hit single “#Beautiful,” bringing out Miguel and Young Jeezy for the remix. After Mimi left the stage, Jeezy continued with his club smash “R.I.P.”
  • Miguel didn’t hurt anyone, but did he did give a crowd swaying performance of “How Many Drinks," bringing out Kendrick Lamar for the remix.
  • Performing her number-one single “Body Party” and “I’m Out,” Ciara killed it with her sick dance moves and sexy style. Nick Minaj opened the set.
  • Charlie Wilson was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. He received a star-studded tribute from India.ArieJamie Foxx, and Stevie Wonder, who covered his classics. Justin Timberlake presented him with the award before Charlie hit the stage to perform a medley of some more of his hits with some help from Pharrell, Snoop Dogg and Mr. Timberlake.
