Lil Wayne talks quitting high school, retirement on 'Katie'

Listen to Lil Wayne on iHeartRadio

Lil Wayne says he has no regrets about not finishing high school but he's not encouraging others to follow in his footsteps.  In a candid interview on the season opener of Katie Couric's talk show, the 30-year-old rapper said it was actually his mom who suggested he quit school and get his GED instead when she noticed her already-platinum-selling son packing a gun in his backpack on his way to public school one day.

Wayne prefaced his story about quitting high school by strongly suggesting that kids stay in school - especially his own kids with whom he says he's looking forward to spending more time when he's retired - at the ripe old age of 35.

The New Orleans-born rapper also credited his mom with helping him kick drug habits that were endangering his health and spoke about the time he spent in jail for drug and gun possession.  The interview marked Lil Wayne's second interview with Couric.  He previously spoke with the veteran journalist for a segment that aired on CBS' "60 Minutes" in 2009.
