  • Born Schafer Smith in Arkansas and raised in Las Vegas, Ne-Yo began his professional music career as a songwriter, placing songs with Marques HoustonMarioMary J. BligeB2KFaith Evans and Musiq.
  • As a singer, Ne-Yo put out a string of hits in 2005. "So Sick" went to number-one on the Billboard Hot 100, "When You're Mad" reached number-15 and "Sexy Love" got to number-seven. He also made a guest appearance on Ghostface Killah's "Back Like That."
  • His debut album, In My Own Words, dropped in early 2006 and debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200. In 2007, his sophomore disc, Because of You, also debuted at number-one followed by Year of the Gentleman in 2008 and Libra Scale in 2010. His fifth studio album, R.E.D., dropped last November. 
  • In 2009, Billboard ranked him as the 57th best artist of the 2000s.
