Is BET biased against white rappers? What's what white Canadian rapper Corey Charron is claiming after he was shut out of the BET Cypher, despite having won 106th and Park's Freestyle Friday competition.
According to AllHipHop, Charron claims that the network told him that the decision wasn't racial, but that the Cypher was only for “artists that have huge projects that are current.”
But he says a spot in the Cypher a was supposed to be one of the prizes for winning the Freestyle Friday contest. “I’m a white Canadian [with] kind of like a baby-faced nerdy look to me, and I just really don’t think they thought I was going to win the competition. It’s unfortunate that discrimination still exists in 2013. Who cares if I’m a white Canadian? I still managed to beat every American and win a prize we contractually agreed on... I have a lot of fans that wanted to see my verse on the Cypher. Looks like I’m going to have to film it from Canada and put the whole industry on blast."
MY 2 CENTS:
- Can BET be racist against white artists? It's Black Entertainment Television, after all.
- Action Bronson was on the Cypher. Isn't he white?
- If the contract says he's supposed to get a shot in the Cypher, then he should sue.
- This is probably going to be better publicity for him than actually being in the Cypher.
