After a week of tributes and memorials, Nelson Mandela was buried Sunday in his childhood village of Qunu, South Africa, ending an incredible life that saw him go from a prison to president to become an international icon.

Although the lowering of his casket in the ground was closed to the media, reports from the funeral said that helicopters flew by displaying the national flag while cannons fired a 21-gun salute.

An officiator at the grave site said, "Yours was truly a long walk to freedom. Now you have achieved the ultimate freedom in the bosom of God, your maker."
